I noticed a little while ago that my garage door motor was making unusual noises, creaking and groaning as it pulled the door up. Upon further investigation I found that the main bearing on top of the motor had failed and was grinding away.
Garage door motors from about 10-25 years ago placed a lot of tension on the motor, in particular when the door was being lifted.
New Merlin garage door motors are built differently, tensioning the system within the track and using the motor simply to move the belt to open and close the door.
They also incorporate a belt drive that is much quieter that the old chain that rattled and scraped on the track or pole.
